Our Model A Muffler is built to the original Ford specifications. Not only does it fit your car exactly as an original muffler, but it performs as well as or better than a NOS Ford Muffler. The dyno test confirmed that this standard and Original Ford design muffler will work perfectly on engines up to 85 horsepower.

From the start of production in 1927 until March of 1929, this style of muffler (shown on left) was used on all Model A Fords. The overall height of the inlet pipe is 1" shorter and it is specially bent to provide additional clearance around the motor mount. Otherwise, the muffler is the same as the later production version.
See pdf
enlarged version to read dimensions on drawing.
Part A-5230-AR -
This fits Model A cars made from 1928 until Mid-1929. and is made exactly to Ford Specs.
Be sure to check your tail pipe clamp location on your frame, see Article under 1928 muffler.
Part A-5230 28-M29 - This fits Model A cars made from 1928 until Mid-1929 but is a standard (A5230-BS) muffler modified to fit the earlier frame.
Be sure to check your tail pipe clamp location on your frame, see Article under 1928 muffler |

We have modified the internal
baffling of this muffler to provide a flow-through equivalent
to a 2 ¼" round pipe. The inlet pipe being 2"
inside-diameter, this means there is very little restriction
in the muffler. Ford originally designed this muffler with
a 1 ¾" inside-diameter rear tail pipe. We are
finding that because the exhaust gases cool as they flow
through the muffler, the smaller tail pipe works just fine,
as the exhaust gases have cooled sufficiently to take up
much less space. All gases (oxygen, nitrogen and carbon
monoxide) expand or contract dramatically with only small
changes in temperature. Available in black painted steel or Stainless Steel. Read more

Station Wagon / AA Truck Muffler
The Station Wagon and AA need a longer tailpipe to deflect exhaust out the rear of the vehicle. This is our standard painted steel muffler which has a rear extension welded to the rear of the muffler. This muffler will work with the A-5255-B tail pipe below. This muffler will also work on a AA truck, see link below for details on various AA muffler and tail pipe configurations. At this time we do not sell any AA tail pipe extensions, but the link has details on various types.

Muffler Clamp - This clamp is made exactly to the original Ford drawings. Note the following features not found
on other reproductions:
1. Made from steel - it will not break or crack and can be twisted and bent without breaking.
2. Bolts are Grade 5 high strength zinc plated. Fine Thread.
3. Nuts are small pattern brass.
4. The MARC judging committee un-officially says they cannot tell this one from an original.
All Clamps are painted with High Temperature Black Manifold paint.
Correct installation is essential to getting a leak-free seal.

Permatex Muffler Sealer
Used between the manifold and the muffler inlet pipe to make a tight seal.
Use this muffler sealer to make a good seal at the 45º flare where it fits to the manifold.
Dampen both surfaces with a sponge, apply a good coating all around on one surface, about 1/16” thick.
At this point you should have the tail pipe clamp installed, but loose. Using a jack, gently push the muffler against the
Manifold. Be sure the alignment looks good front to back. Then install the muffler clamp and tighten. Release the jack, and wait over night before starting the engine.
After starting and warming up, re-tighten the muffler clamp. This should be the last time you have to make any adjustments. Don’t forget to snug up but not tight the tail pipe clamp, just enough so there is no rattle.

Tailpipe for Station Wagon/ Delivery/ Panel on passenger car chassis.
In January of 1931 Ford Motor Company made a recommendation
to retrofit a longer tailpipe to all Station Wagons
for safety purposes. The longer tailpipe keeps exhaust
fumes from getting into the passenger compartments.
If buying a new Aries muffler we will provide the short
tail piece welded to the muffler, the new tailpipe,
all clamps to attach it and the special spring bar.
If you already have an Aries muffler, we will provide
all of the items above and you will have to cut off
the existing tail pipe and weld on the small piece we
provide. This modification will only fit on an original
equipment muffler or an Aries Muffler.
Our kit includes the tailpipe extension, three clamps, a rear
spring clip and all bolts. We also include a rear
muffler extension which must be welded to the rear
of the muffler after the tailpipe is removed. If
buying a new Aries muffler, we will weld this extension
for you. Tailpipe may need modification if used with a non-standard length muffler.
